Inline Vic Masters Newsletter
Dear Nearly Deads,
Our next Monthly Masters (30+) is scheduled for Friday August 15th - 9.00 pm at Puckhandlers. Mark Schupeltz from Tassie will be coming direct from the airport attempting to defend his title from the Silver Cup. Dean and Cougars company are welcome to join him again if you dare to defend the cups honour! We should have enough for a 4 team comp. Please email me back if you are intending to play, especially goalies. The cost is $10.00 per person.
The Nationals training for Masters/Veterans are at Dandenong Skate Cenrtre and are open to all players over 30 to attend regardless if you have been selected or have no interest in going. They are usually comprised of some light drills at the start with most of the time dedicated to scrimaging. The start time may vary depending on the leagues games running on time as per below.
Sunday 3rd August 6.00pm/7.00pm
Sunday 10th August 6.00pm/7.00pm
Sunday 17th August 7.00pm/8.00pm
Sunday 24th To Be Advise.
Anyone interested in playing a little Ice hockey in October? The "Night Owls" (Masters Ice Hockey Gang) are between seasons on Sundays in October early November and will take it easy on us if we come out for a hit. Most of the them don't wear shoulder pads as they play non contact. Even inline padded shorts will suffice as they don't tolerate slap shots either. So we just need to work out ice skates. I can get hold of a couple pairs myself and I will talk to the rink owner as they have some skates available at the rink. Stay tuned.

I hope you like the new look to the “Monthly Masters Newsletter” which I have changed to “Inline Vic Masters Newsletter”. I found the old man above on the internet and could not help myself. I have named him “Hack” and I think he captures the mood well. Due to my lack of computer skills I have to work in Microsoft Word but if anyone knows what they are doing and can convert this to PDF prior to me sending out please feel free to volunteer for the next one.
The circulation has increased dramatically over the last few months and there are now 120 email addresses of active players in which I have to send out in two lots otherwise my email thingy has a conniption. Let me know if anyone you know wants to be added to the list. The more people we reach the easier it is to organise events whether they are active players or not. We encourage people to just come out and have “a hit” every once in while if that’s what they like to do.
Silver Cup – July 5th to July 13th.
We had 4 teams entered into the Silver Cup in the 40 and over “Veterans Division” which turned out to be a huge success for us as a group. The level of play was faster and harder than I imagined it would be. Thanks to those players participating in multiple divisions from Silver, bronze and Tin who gave us the numbers we needed and the skill to lift our game. The winning team, “The Cougars” was made up of players from all skill levels and although went through undefeated had to come back from a 3-1 deficit at the half to beat the “Old Farts” 6-4. The “Old Farts” battled back from the basement with a never say die attitude and almost pulled off an upset not be remembered. Congrats to Miro Kelbil of the ‘Warriors” with the most points (22 in 6 games!) and Mark Schupeltz who captured the MVP with his tenacious play. Also congrats to Ricko Downing of the “Cougars” who finished with highest save percentage and the highest amount of “beer to goals allowed ratio” of 136 to 15!
Highlights…ok there were a few…
- The open ice one on one battles between Mark Schupeltz of the Cougars & Lucy Parrington of the Old Farts….Bragging rights to be determined at the next comp!
- James Costello’s end to end goal whist pinning the puck with the toe of the blade and shooting it in the corner as such…yes it should have been called and Ross is still cleaning up the vomit in the stands.
- The toe save by Colin Page off Mark Schupeltz in the Final game…he didn’t tell us until after the game that he pulled a hammy in the warm up!! (He didn’t want us to worry…thanks for that Colin!)
- The winning highlite goes to Dean (Pants) Prystupa which is best quoted from Ross Fisher off the Puckhandlers website. “The other surprise was one of the funniest things witnessed on a hockey rink, when Dean Prystupa got his pants caught in his wheels and they literally ended up below his knees as he scrambled toward the bench to get assistance. At one point he was about 3mts from the bench when he had to drag himself the rest of the way. Everyone was glad for Dean he wasn't just wearing the old fashioned jockstrap underneath, which would have had a mardi gras look about it.”
Usually we only need to talk about fun and good news but sometimes we need to mention the sad and bad. Dave Skelt otherwise known as “Maddog” has had to hang both his inline and ice skates up as he has announced his retirement last week. Anyone who has played against Dave can tell you why he deserves the name “Maddog.” I don’t think I have ever seen Dave give up on a puck. He has the tenacity of a bit bull terrier but balanced with sound judgement and clean play. Rarely ever do you see such qualities together in one player. Coming off an operation on his neck over a year ago doctors orders has forced Dave off the rink after a particularly hard hit in ice last week. There is no way a guy like Dave can go out and cruise and the area of the injury is just not worth the potential damage and consequences. See you around the rink Dave as you train those pups of yours! The Raptors won’t be the same without you!
Chuck Winum a true Warrior in many ways and such a nice America that he often gets confused for a Canadian has accepted a position in Chicago and will moving back to the US in early January of 2009. Chuck played ice hockey in his early days before becoming a pioneer in the old New York Roller Hockey League where he became known as “Spaghetti Legs” playing in quad skates… “In those days Inlines hadn’t been invented yet”. Chuck moved to Melbourne and became and integral part of inline hockey in Victoria playing for Sunshine Seahawks, Warriors and Patriots whilst serving on boards, committees and tribunals. Chucks sense of fair play, determination on the rink, quick sense of humour, and friendship will be truly missed by everyone he has played with and against. Don’t forget to say good bye to Chuck before the end of the year. I sense a Master’s trip to Chicago down the road!

Dear Chronological Disadvantaged,
We did it! We played 30 games over the long weekend without any serious casualty’s. Only some bruised bodies and egos as to be expected in such games of speed only seen in wheelchair rugby! In fact the only two scratches in the tournament were as a result of Harry S. tripping over his own bag on the sides in his league game (separated shoulder) and Ren who twisted his leg whist teeing off at the 18th on the Saturday!
Although both Harry’s team, the Fudpuckers and Ren’s team the Redbacks never recovered from their personnel losses the remaining teams fought out it out to the end. With the Rats OB’s sitting solid in first place the fight was on for the two remaining playoff spots. All the blood and sweat spilled in the round robin games peaked on the 2nd last game of the Sunday night when the Rangers suited up against the Chiefs. A win by the Chiefs puts them in the medal round on Monday; anything else opens the back door for Belic’s Relics to sneak in. The moment came with 3 seconds left on the clock, Chiefs up a goal 2-1, Costa on the Rangers flips a shot from the corner, Dr House in net tries to cut off the pass and the rest is history…time stood still except for the puck into the back of the net at the buzzer! Chiefs pack up their tepees and the pesky Relics advance only to share a similar yet less dramatic fate against the Rangers the next day. Congratulations goes to the Rats OB’s who went on take the Gold medal, the Rangers well deserved Silver medal and those underrated “bronzed” Relics who never said die and cost the bookies with upset after upset!
We would like to thank Cheryl Mcqueen for the convenient schedule and all those that helped us out with the scoring, especially Clint Jacobs.
For those wanting to tryout for the Victoria Masters and Veterans teams please be at the Dandenong rink for a 6.00 pm start this Sunday June the 15th.
We are looking at the possibility of having a Veterans division (40 and Over) in the Silver Cup which runs between July 5th and 13th at Puckhandlers. We have interest from Tassie to put a team in so far. If you are interested please email me at turbachs@yahoo.com.au . We only need 4 teams to make it happen.
Our next Monthly Masters (30 and up) event will be held on Friday July 18th – 8.00pm at the Lilydale Roller Skating Centre, “Lilydale Industrial Park” 155 Beresford Rd, Lilydale (03) 9735 5888. $12.00 per stick.
